A Lash Artist's Guide: The Do's and Don'ts for Your First Eyelash Extension Appointment

Do Your Homework Beforehand

Let's start with a bit of pre-appointment homework, shall we? Just like you'd research a restaurant before dining there, it's excellent practice to do a little digging before you book your first lash extension appointment. Browse through different lash artists portfolios on Instagram, be sure to take note of the styles and lengths to get a better idea of what you'd like. Whether you're dreaming of a natural look or craving full-on drama, knowing what you want will make the process smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your lash artist. It’s okay to vet lash artists before you proceed with booking to minimize the risk of a lash horror story. Some questions to consider asking potential lash artists would be:

• What training and experience do you have? How long have you been doing lashes?
• Do you work out of your home or a studio? Can you send pictures of your lash space?
• What types of lash styles do you specialize in? What kinds of lash extensions do you use? (Familiarize yourself with the difference between synthetic, silk, and faux mink lashes. Be sure any minks being used are faux mink due to potential allergens and inhumane sourcing practices.)

Don't Overdo the Caffeine

Ah, caffeine – the lifeblood of many of us! While it might be tempting to fuel up with a double shot of espresso before your appointment, it's actually a good idea to lay off the caffeine for a couple of hours. The slight jitteriness caused by caffeine won't exactly help in achieving those steady and serene lashes we're aiming for. Remember, you’ll be laying still for up to 3 hours, and you don’t want a sudden jolt to happen while your lash artist has extra pointy tweezers or medical grade adhesive near your eye.

Do Arrive Fresh-Faced and Mascara-Free

When you step into the lash haven, it's like entering a zen zone for your eyes. To make sure your lash artist can work their magic without any hindrance, it's a golden rule to arrive with a clean canvas. Skip the mascara, eyeliner, and any other eye makeup on the day of your appointment. This not only saves time but also helps ensure the lash adhesive bonds seamlessly with your natural lashes. Take some extra time on cleansing your lashes -  lash artists will offer a pre-cleansing treatment. Don't Be Shy – Communicate!

Do Embrace the Relaxation

Wear comfy clothes and be ready to stay still for up to 3 hours while your lash artist gets to work. Don’t be embarrassed if you manage to catch a little catnap during the process – you’re not alone! It happens more often than not, and we love to see our clients comfortable and relaxed enough that they can doze off. Just make sure you don't drift off so completely that you start snoring or shifting your head – we're here for the glam, not the nap, even if it is a great bonus! 

Do Brush, But Gently

Once your lashes are ready to face the world, it's time to introduce them to your new BFF – the lash wand. Gently brushing your lashes each morning can help keep them looking their best and prevent any potential tangles. Hold the base of your lashes with one hand and softly comb through with the wand in the other. Trust me, this little TLC ritual will do wonders for maintaining the shape and beauty of your extensions.

Don't Be a Rub-a-Dub-Dubber

We get it – life happens, and sometimes a good old eye rub is inevitable. But do your best to resist the urge. Rubbing, tugging, or pulling on your lash extensions can lead to premature shedding and, well, we want those lovelies to stay put for as long as possible, don't we? If your eyes feel itchy, try gently tapping them instead of rubbing. Your lashes will thank you! 

Do Ditch the Lash Curler

Once you have lash extensions, you won’t need to use a lash curler or mascara. Using either one with extensions could result in damaged lashes, poor retention, and unnecessary pulling on both your natural and artificial lashes. Ditching things like strip lashes and eyeliner are also recommended. If you notice you’re itching to grab any of these, it might be time to book a fill instead of risking the integrity of your lashes!

Don’t Use Oil-Based Face Products

Reaching for your favourite oil cleanser may lead to more damage to your lashes than it’s worth. Oil loosens the bonds of the adhesive which causes the extensions to shed faster than they should. Be weary of any skincare or makeup products that contain oil and opt for a water-based cleanser instead. Protect your lashes, and your lash artist will thank you! 

Do Schedule Regular Fills

Lash extensions are like constant art in motion – they require some regular TLC here and there to stay fresh and fabulous. To keep your lashes looking on point, consider scheduling in fill appointments every 2 to 3 weeks depending on your lash growth. The rule of thumb is anything under 50% is considered a full set, so be sure to keep an eye on how many lashes you shed. This can differ per person. Regular fills ensure that any fallen lashes are replaced and that your extensions maintain their lush and voluminous look.
