Lash Lifts or Lash Extensions: How To Help Clients Choose

Lash Lifts or Lash Extensions: How To Help Clients Choose

As artists, it's tempting to have a favourite service. But the best recommendation isn't based on what we enjoy performing; it's based on your client's natural lashes, lifestyle, maintenance preferences, and desired result.

When you can confidently recommend the service that's right for them, not only do you improve client satisfaction, you also build trust and long-term loyalty.

Start with the Consultation, Not the Service

Before recommending anything, start with asking the right questions.

  • How do they want their lashes to look? Are they looking for something subtle and natural? Or do they want something a lot bolder or more dramatic?

  • How much time do they spend on their appearance on a typical day?

  • Do they wear mascara every day?

  • How frequently are they willing to come in for appointments?

It’s also helpful to know if they’ve had either service before as they may have experiences to refer to. Understanding their expectations is far more valuable than simply looking at their natural lashes.

When a Lash Lift Is the Better Choice

A lash lift isn't a "lighter version" of extensions. It's a completely different service.

Clients who already have healthy, medium-to-long natural lashes will often achieve beautiful results with a lift alone. It's also a great option for clients who prefer minimal maintenance or simply prefer a natural, “their lashes but better,” look.

A lash lift can also be the perfect introduction for someone who is nervous about trying eyelash extensions for the first time.

When Lash Extensions Are the Better Choice

If a client wants additional length, fullness, texture, or styling, extensions make more sense.

Extensions allow artists to completely customize the final result using different lengths, curls, diameters, and styling. They're also ideal for clients with sparse lashes, asymmetrical eyes, hooded lids, or certain facial features that can benefit from corrective styling.

Rather than asking, "Do you want extensions?" consider asking, "What do you want your lashes to look like?" The answer often tells you which service is the better fit.

Don't Oversell Extensions

Not every client needs extensions.

If someone has naturally long, healthy lashes and simply wants more lift and definition, recommending a lash lift demonstrates honesty and professionalism. Clients remember when an artist recommends what's best for them instead of what results in the most money.

Whenever I have a client with beautiful natural lashes, I’m always intrigued to know if they’ve tried a lash lift in the past. Because I know their lashes would look amazing with a lift, I’m happy to promote the service to them. Even if they opt for extensions now, introducing them to lash lifts gives them another option if they ever decide they want something lower maintenance.

Educate Instead of Comparing

Avoid positioning one service as "better." Instead, explain that they solve different problems. A lash lift enhances what the client already has. Lash extensions create what cannot be achieved naturally. When clients understand the purpose of each service, they're much more confident in their decision and happier with their results.

Expand Your Service Menu

If you've focused on just one of these service offerings, consider expanding your skill set with one of Sugarlash PRO’s online courses. By offering both lash lifts and lash extensions, you'll be able to recommend the best option for each client, not just the one you currently provide. This allows you to meet a wider range of client needs, attract new clientele, and position yourself as a well-rounded lash artist.

Whether you're looking to master lash lifts or refine your lash extension techniques, our online education is designed to help you build confidence and deliver beautiful results with both services.
